Our ISP rep kept saying 'best effort' like it was fine, so I finally made him define it on a call
We run a 12 person insurance office in Boise and our upload speed tanks every day from 2 to 4pm when everyone is on the phone system. I asked our account rep what speed we were actually guaranteed and he said "best effort," which I had been nodding along to for 8 months without knowing what it meant. Turns out it means zero guarantee, so the 50 Mbps upload on the contract is more of a wish than a promise. I got him to put in writing that our circuit averages 6 Mbps up during that window and he stopped using the phrase pretty fast. Now I'm wondering if a second cheap line just for the phones would fix it for less than the $340 a month they want for a dedicated fiber upgrade. Has anyone split voice and data onto two connections and actually seen the call quality hold up?
