Bought a cheap toner for line tracing, almost cost me a whole afternoon

I usually rent a proper TDR from the supply house, but last week I needed to trace a run in a finished basement and grabbed a $40 toner from the hardware store instead. Figured it would be fine for a short job, but it kept jumping between two cables because the signal was weak through the drywall. Wasted 3 hours chasing the wrong pair until I pulled out my old analog beeper and it locked on in 10 minutes. Has anyone else had luck with those budget toners, or is it always worth spending the extra cash on a good one?

Wow, really? Three hours over a $40 toner sounds like a you problem, man. Maybe the cable was just bad from the start.
