I thought the "always test the line before you drill" advice was just old guy paranoia, now I'm not so sure
I've been running cable for about 6 years now and I always heard the old timers say to test every single line with a toner and a probe before you put a drill bit anywhere near a wall. I figured it was just them being slow and scared honestly. Last Tuesday I was doing a 3 room install in a duplex over in Garland and I was rushing because it was already 4pm and I had a 6pm thing to get to. I skipped the probe on the second bedroom, drilled right into what I thought was empty space and hit a live 120v romex run. The bit grabbed, the drill kicked back hard and the breaker popped. I stood there for a minute just staring at the hole. My heart was going crazy and my hand was shaking. Now I'm not saying the old guys are 100 percent right about everything but that one got me. So my question is do you all actually probe every cavity or is it more of a gut call depending on the house age?
