Why does everyone use electrical tape on outdoor splitters?

I've been doing installs for about 5 years now and I keep seeing other crews wrap their outdoor splitters with electrical tape. I pulled off a tape wrap yesterday on a house that was only 6 months old and the whole inside was wet and corroded. The connectors were rusty and the signal was shot. I always use silicone self-fusing tape or just a decent weatherproof boot. Is there some reason people still reach for the regular black tape or am I missing something?

Wait, are you sure those guys are using regular electrical tape and not the rubber splicing tape that looks almost identical? That black stuff that fuses to itself is actually pretty good for outdoor use if you stretch it right... I've seen a lot of new guys grab the wrong roll off the truck and it costs them down the road.

Whoa hold up, are you serious? Six months and it was already shot? That's rough, man. I mean I've seen tape jobs go bad but that's next level. Is it really that common to see people grab the wrong roll?
