Appreciation post: the 5 cent screw that saved a $400 lens repair
Sent a clients 70-200 to the shop in Dallas after the zoom ring got stiff. They quoted $400 and said the whole helicoid needed replacing. I told them to hold off and took it apart myself on a Tuesday. Turned out one tiny set screw on the focus cam had backed out about a quarter turn and was dragging on the barrel. Tightened it, cleaned the old grease, put it back together. Two hours of work and a 5 cent screw. Called the client and told him what happened. He asked why the shop would lie. I said they probably just didnt look that hard. Anyone else had a shop quote a full teardown when the problem was one loose screw?
