My $9 jewelers screwdriver beats my $120 spudger set for flex cable work

After 12 stubborn ribbon cables on an old Nikon F3 last Tuesday, I grabbed a cheap watchmaker screwdriver with a flat tip and it popped them loose clean, while the expensive plastic spudgers just kept bending the connectors, has anyone else ditched fancy tools for the cheap stuff in tight spots?
