Tried using a ultrasonic cleaner on a shutter mechanism
Had a Pentax MV that needed cleaning, figured I'd try a cheap ultrasonic cleaner. Put the shutter assembly in for 5 minutes. Came out looking clean, but the blades were all loose and wouldn't close. Turns out those old cloth shutters absorb water and get wrecked. Has anyone found a way to clean them without pulling the curtains?

Did you try isopropyl alcohol instead of water?

Oh I actually tried isopropyl alcohol once @taylorm89 and it was a total mess... it just evaporated way too fast and left this weird residue behind. Water works fine for what I'm doing but you really have to let it dry completely or you'll end up with problems later. The trick is using distilled water if you're worried about minerals, that's what made the difference for me. I'd stick with water personally unless you're trying to clean something that can't get wet.
