My 3 year old tent poles finally gave out at Lost Lake

Last Saturday I was setting up at Lost Lake and the main pole on my old dome tent just snapped clean in half. It was 3 years of regular use, probably 40+ trips, and I always thought the fiberglass would bend more before breaking. The crack happened right at the midpoint where the shock cord goes through, and the whole rainfly collapsed on my gear. I ended up using duct tape and a spare hiking stick to prop it up for the night, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had poles fail like that and if aluminum is actually worth the extra weight for a weekend pack.
