The $40 alternator that died on I-80 at 11pm

Three months back I grabbed a reman alternator from Pick-N-Pull for my '96 Civic and got it bolted on in a gas station lot outside Reno, only to have it throw a bearing just past Winnemucca with the dash lights flickering like a slot machine. I limped to a truck stop, pulled the belt, and charged the battery off a $20 jump pack long enough to roll into a motel, then spent the next morning swapping in a junkyard unit from a '99 that had half the miles. Anyone else ever gamble on a cheap electrical part and end up sleeping in a parking lot over it, or am I the only one dumb enough to skip the bench test?
