The old guy at the junkyard who spotted my swap in 2 seconds

Last Saturday I was pulling a rear diff out of a 90s Crown Vic at Pick-N-Pull over in Tacoma. This older man walks by, looks at my wrench set, and goes 'you're swapping that into a Miata, aren't you?' I hadn't even told anyone yet. He pointed at the axle stubs and said 'these go for $40 on Facebook if you find the right listing, but you're smarter than that.' Honestly, that moment stuck with me because he didn't give me some big lecture, he just nodded and said 'measure the flange twice, I've seen three guys blow the u-joint because they guessed.' I paid $65 for the whole unit and spent Sunday grinding off the brackets. Has anyone else had a random stranger at the yard just called your whole plan like that? Any tips on finding the right driveshaft length without dropping $200 on a custom one?
