I used to roll negative equity into a new loan every 2 years, then a dealership in Mesa showed me the math on paper
For years I treated my car loan like a subscription. Every 24 months or so I would walk into a lot, get talked into a new ride, and let them bury whatever I still owed into the next loan. I honestly thought that was just how it worked, and nobody ever stopped me. Then back in March I sat down at a dealer in Mesa and the finance guy slid a sheet across the table showing my payoff versus what they were giving me on trade. The gap was $6,800, and he was adding it right on top of a new $31,000 loan. I asked him to print it out, took it home, and stared at it at the kitchen table. Two years of payments and I had actually gone backwards, which sounds stupid now but I never saw it in one spot like that. So I got a quote from my credit union instead, refinanced the car I already had at 5.9 percent, and I am keeping it until the wheels fall off. Has anyone else actually asked to see the trade gap written down before signing?
