Vent: my credit union actually lowered my rate after I asked, and I almost missed it
So I was sitting in the lobby at Members First on Saturday paying my 4th month on a loan I took at 13.9 percent, and a lady named Rosa at the desk asked if I wanted a quick review of my account. I said sure, and she came back ten minutes later with a paper showing they could drop me to 8.4 percent with no fees, just a form and the same payoff date. I sat there almost saying no because I figured there had to be a catch, and now my payment is $71 less a month. Has anyone else just walked in and asked their bank for a better rate, or did most of you have to go through a full refi somewhere else?
Why is it that the people who need the break the most are the ones too scared to ask for it? I walked into my credit union last year just to close an account and the teller noticed I'd been paying 19 percent on a used car loan for two years. She ran some numbers and got me down to 9 percent right there at the window, no refi, no new paperwork beyond one signature. My cousin went to a big bank for the same thing and they told him to come back with a cosigner. Sometimes the little places actually want to keep you, and all it takes is one person behind the desk who feels like doing their job that day.
