Hot take: my manager told me to leave 30 minutes early and it made me rethink the whole overtime thing
I always thought grinding out 50 hour weeks was the only way to get noticed for a promotion. Then my manager pulled me aside on a Friday and said, "Go home, you're done at 4." I was confused and honestly a little annoyed. But I started paying attention and noticed she was the one who got promoted to director, and she worked maybe 40 hours most weeks. A guy on our team who logs 60 hours every week just got put on a performance plan. Now I'm wondering if I've been measuring effort wrong this entire time. Has anyone else had a boss basically tell them to work less and seen it actually pay off?
A buddy of mine had the same thing happen, his lead basically kicked him out of the office at 5 every day and he fought it at first. Turns out the guy was getting more done in those 40 hours because he wasn't burnt out and half asleep by Thursday. Last I heard he got the promotion over two guys who lived at their desks.
