My mentor in Cincinnati told me to stop chasing jobs and start building a list instead
I was complaining to Frank, a guy who ran a HVAC crew for 30 years, about sending out 40 resumes in two months and getting two calls back. He pulled a spiral notebook from his truck and showed me a page with 12 names and phone numbers on it, guys he worked with going back to 1998. He said he never filled a job by applying anywhere, every guy on his crew came from someone he already knew. I started a list that night, just 5 names, and texted two of them the next morning. For those of you who got work through people you know, did you keep some kind of list going or was it more random than that?
