I'm rethinking sanding grits after my pine bookshelf job

I only went up to 120 grit and the finish is great. Why do we always recommend higher grits?

Wait actually, higher grits help a lot with stains or clear coats. The pine might just be hiding it this time.

From my work, high grits block stain on pine.

Oh man, that's a good point about the wood type! Some pine just drinks it up no matter what you do.
