Unpopular opinion: a $9 wood moisture meter retired my $400 pin meter for framing
Two years back I was framing a garage in Boise and my pin meter read 19% on Doug fir that felt bone dry to the touch. I bought a cheap pinless meter off the shelf at the lumber yard for $9 just to test against it. The cheap one read 11%, the pins were reading surface wet from morning dew, not core moisture. I checked both against a known dry board and a soaked one in the shop, and the $9 pinless tracked the real number every time. My $400 pin meter sits in the truck now and only comes out for finished trim where I need to know the exact spot. Anyone else get burned by pin meters reading wet surface instead of wet core?
