Kid at the parts counter said my $2,500 truck was junk, then I did the math

Stopped by O'Reilly's in Phoenix for a water pump gasket last Tuesday. Some teenager behind the counter saw my 1998 Ranger and laughed, said it wasn't worth fixing. I asked him what his car payment was, he said $480 a month. That's $5,760 a year. I've put maybe $600 into this truck in the last 3 years including tires. It's got 210,000 miles and starts every morning. I told him I could buy another whole beater every 10 months for what he pays annually. He didn't have much to say after that. Anyone else get this from younger folks who don't get the budget car lifestyle?
