My uncle told me my $1200 truck was junk, and I thought about that the whole drive home
My uncle Ray has flipped cars out of his driveway in Modesto for 30 years, and last Sunday he walked around my 1998 Ford Ranger and said "you paid $1200 for a truck with a salvage title and no AC?" I laughed it off at the time, but on the drive home I started doing the math on what he actually meant. He was not knocking the truck, he was telling me I bought it at the worst point in the curve and would have to eat the repairs myself. That thing already needs a $300 clutch job and a $90 water pump, so now I'm in it for $1600 on a truck worth maybe $2000 on a good day. He was basically saying let someone else pay for the boring fixes, then buy it cheap once it runs right. I still love the little truck, but I keep replaying that line every time I open the hood, so has anyone else gotten a hard truth like this from a family member who flips cars?
