Showerthought: the guy at the tire shop talked me out of the cheapest set and saved me $200
Went to a little tire place off Highway 99 last Thursday to get cheap rubber for my $1,400 Corolla beater and the owner asked what I actually drove it for. I said mostly 12 miles of freeway to work, and he told me the $52 no name tires I wanted would last maybe a year before they got loud and started howling. He sold me a set of take offs with 8/32s left for $180 out the door instead, and told me to check the date codes before I ever buy cheap rubber again. I checked the DOT stamps when I got home and they were only 2 years old, way better than the crusty old ones on there from 2016. Kind of weird getting car advice that made me spend less money, but here we are. Anybody else got a shop guy who steers them away from the junk instead of toward it?
