Picked a $700 rebuild kit over a $400 junkyard motor for my 1996 Tacoma, still not sure I chose right

Everyone told me 220k on the clock meant just swap in another 3.4 and be done, but I tore into the original instead and found the head gasket was the whole problem. What would you have done with the same $300 gap?
