Pulled a junkyard 5.3 instead of rebuilding the 4.8 and it was the easiest $800 I ever spent
My 2004 Silverado ate a lifter at 187,000 miles and I was quoted $2,900 to rebuild the 4.8. A guy at the yard off Route 9 in Albany sold me a 5.3 out of a wrecked Tahoe for $800 with 112,000 miles on it, and I swapped it in my driveway over two weekends with a rented hoist. Same mounts, same harness, and the truck fired on the third crank. I got 40 more horsepower and it burns about a quart of oil every 3,000 miles, which beats the knocking the old one did. Rebuilding sounds smart until you add up machine shop time, and nobody tells you the 5.3 is basically the same block. Who else has gone the junkyard long block route and did you regret it later?
