Rant: my uncle in Akron talked me out of the $900 paint job and into a $60 sanding block

He said shiny paint over rust is just a lie you pay for, so I spent a weekend sanding and priming instead of spraying my $700 beater. Now I'm wondering how many other "upgrades" I've done backwards, what's the dumbest money you spent before the cheap fix made sense?
