Hit $5,000 in the coffee can after 2 years of cash only
I keep a Folgers can in my closet and drop in whatever bills are left after I pay rent and groceries in cash. Last week I finally counted it and hit $5,012, which blew my mind because I never felt like I was saving anything. Does anyone else keep a running total somewhere, or do you just let it pile up and hope for the best?
Man, that's a nice surprise when you actually count it up. I do something similar but I keep a little notebook and write down the date and how much goes in each time, then tally it once a month. Sounds boring but it keeps me from raiding the jar for dumb stuff, since I can see it growing. One tip: if yours is mostly $1s and $5s, swap the small bills for bigger ones at the bank every so often. Just makes it easier to count and you won't be as tempted to dip in.
