Tried to cancel a subscription and they asked for my card digits

Went to cancel my gym membership in Phoenix yesterday and the front desk guy wouldn't do it without my debit card number on file. I told him I've been cash only for 2 years and don't have one, so he just stared at me like I was from another planet. Anyone else hit this weird wall where companies can't process a simple cancellation without plastic in their system?
