Laughed at my roommate for keeping a fridge list taped to the door, now I do it too
My roommate Maria started taping a paper list of everything in our fridge to the door back in March, and I gave her a hard time about it for weeks. Then I did a clean out and threw away a $9 block of feta, half a bag of spinach, and 3 chicken thighs that all went bad while sitting behind stuff I forgot about. Maria's list is ugly and covered in tape, but we've cut our food waste down to almost nothing since I started adding to it. Does anyone else keep a written list on the fridge door, or do you all just dig around and hope for the best?
The next level of this is making the list work both ways, so instead of just tracking what's in there you add the date you bought stuff. Then you can see at a glance what needs to get eaten first before it turns. We started doing that and it basically killed the whole "mystery container in the back" problem. You just scan the list, pick the oldest thing, and build dinner around it. Takes like 30 seconds a day and saves way more than $9 of feta every month.
