My grandma saw my fridge on FaceTime and asked where the icebox went
She was born in 1938 and grew up with a real icebox on a farm outside Abilene, so when she spotted my packed shelves last Tuesday she asked why I was hoarding milk like a blizzard was coming. I laughed it off, but then I counted 11 containers of leftovers in there and only two were still good, which is basically the same panic she grew up with, just with plastic wrap. Do you all keep a running list of what's in there, or do you just dig around until something smells wrong?
So is the real question here whether your grandma ever had to toss anything from that icebox, or did folks back then just eat whatever was left because wasting food wasn't an option? That part fascinates me more than the fridge itself, since our whole idea of "is this still good" seems pretty new. Curious what she'd say if you asked her.
