Chose the $40 programmable thermostat over the $400 smart one, zero regrets

My old thermostat was running the AC at 68 all day while I was at work in Austin. I looked at a smart one that learns your schedule and does all the fancy stuff. But the installer said I'd need a C-wire adapter and maybe a new panel, which was another $250 on top. So I picked the basic programmable model from the hardware store instead. It took me 20 minutes to set up, and I just set it to 78 during the day and 74 when I'm home. My last electric bill dropped $37 compared to the same month last year. Is anyone else finding that the simple, dumb version of climate tech works just as well for a fraction of the cost?

The scheduling feature is honestly the only part that matters. Got the same basic model for my place in Phoenix and it paid for itself in two months just by not cooling an empty house.
