Watched a tool sharpening demo in Detroit and now I run softer feeds
I stopped by a used machinery dealer in Detroit last month, just browsing, and this old timer was showing a carbide end mill that had been run way past its life. He put it on a comparator and you could see the chipped flutes, but he said the real killer was running 8k RPM with aggressive chipload, making tools fail fast. He told me 'slow down and let the tool kiss the metal, not chew it' and I laughed at first. Then he ran the same tool at half the feed and it lasted 4 times longer on a test part we cut right there. I went back to my shop and switched all my roughing passes to lighter depths and 120 IPM instead of 180, and my tool cost per part dropped like 30% in two weeks. Has anyone else played with softer feeds just to extend tool life, or am I leaving money on the table in cycle time?

My old man always said a slow tool is a happy tool, kinda like his lawnmower.
