Back when they taught us coding on actual paper in a community college lab in Ohio

My first programming class in 2005 had us writing out every line of Java by hand on grid paper before we even touched a computer, and turning in those sheets for a grade. Does anyone else remember debugging code on paper instead of just hitting run?

That paper debugging thing was actually a secret filter. Schools that made you do that were weeding out people who weren't serious. The ones who complained the loudest about handwriting code usually dropped out by semester two. Meanwhile the people who just shut up and did it ended up with way better discipline for actual work. Nobody talks about how that boring busywork built better habits than any IDE ever could. It forced you to think through every bracket and semicolon before you typed a single thing.
