Serious question, my code went from 200 lines to 40 after I finally learned what a function call actually does

Spent 3 weeks copy pasting the same block into every button on my calculator app until a guy in a Discord called it out, so now I'm wondering if beginners should learn loops and functions on day one or grind through the ugly version first like I did?
