A 45 minute critique in Cleveland made me rethink my entire career path

I dropped out of a graphic design program back in 2019 and was freelancing logos for local shops. A bar owner paid me $300 for a menu redesign, then spent almost an hour pointing out every spacing and hierarchy flaw with a red pen. He said, "You can draw, but you don't think about how the eye moves first." That night I bought a used typography textbook for $12 and started studying grid systems. Has anyone else gotten harsh feedback from a client that actually stuck with you longer than any class lecture?
