Two guys in my welding class left school, one now runs a shop in Dallas and the other is back home at 28, which path is more normal?

Last week I ran into two guys I used to take welding classes with at our old community college in Fort Worth. One dropped out after 2 semesters, worked nights at a fab shop, and now owns his own gate and railing business in Dallas pulling in around $6k a month. The other left with 30 credits left, moved back in with his parents, and he's 28 now working part time at a parts store. Same starting point, two totally different endings, so was dropping out the smart move or the mistake? I keep going back and forth on whether the shop owner got lucky with timing or if he just outworked everybody. What do you all think separates the dropouts who land on their feet from the ones who stall out?
