Warning: lost 3 hours to a bad RAM stick and a caller who wouldn't listen
Last Tuesday I had one of those days that makes you want to quit the bench. A guy drops off a Dell at my shop in Mesa at 8am, swears it's the hard drive, says he already bought a new SSD. I pull the drive, test it, it's fine. I ask if he added anything before it started, and he says no, nothing, just normal use. So I dig deeper and pop the sticks out. One of them has a scorch mark on the pins. I swap it and the machine boots in 20 seconds. He argues with me for 15 minutes saying RAM can't just go bad, so I show him the stick and he goes quiet. The part that got me was the two hours I wasted pulling his data off a perfectly good drive first, because I believed his guess over my own gut. I started asking two simple questions before touching anything now: what changed right before it broke, and did you move the tower at all. What's your go-to move when a customer is dead sure they know what's broken?
