The I-35 bridge pour failure changed my mix approach

Last summer we did a 40-yard pour near the I-35 overpass and the mix went hot on us in the truck. By the time we got it placed, it was setting up so fast we couldn't get a decent trowel finish. Contractor was yelling about overtime and we had to grind it flat. Now I always check the batch ticket for the concrete temp and ask for a retarder if it's over 85 degrees outside. Anyone else run into this when it's baking in July or do they just send it anyway?

That thing about the mix going hot on you hit close to home. My buddy runs a crew down in Austin and they had the same deal last August, batch ticked at 94 degrees and they didn't think to ask for anything extra. By the time they finished the slab, the edges were already crusting and they had to wet cure it like crazy just to keep it from cracking. He said he learned real fast to write the temp requirement right into the contract, not just ask for it on site.
