I finally watched 40 hours of flat earth videos in 3 weeks and now I get why my uncle won't let it go
So my uncle has been into the flat earth thing for a while now and I always just kinda nodded along at family stuff, but last month I got curious and decided to actually watch a bunch of the videos he keeps sending me. I kept a tally on a sticky note on my fridge and hit 40 hours in about 3 weeks, which sounds insane now that I say it out loud. The weird part is not that I believe any of it, because I don't, but I finally understood the pull. A ton of these channels spend the first 20 minutes tearing apart some chart or clip from a science video, and they do it in a way that feels like you're in on a secret with them. By hour 15 I caught myself pausing a NASA clip and rewinding it like I was actually investigating something, and then I laughed at myself. I called my uncle on a Tuesday night and we talked for like 90 minutes, and for the first time it wasn't a fight, I just asked him what started it for him. Turns out he got hooked after a flood took his basement in 2019 and he was up at 3am scrolling, which I did not expect at all. Has anyone here actually sat through the other side's stuff on purpose, and did it make you see the argument differently or did it just make you more sure you were right?
