Got chewed out by a foreman for skipping a site walk in Dallas last Tuesday

I showed up to a framing job in Dallas last week thinking I had it all figured out from the plans. Foreman pulled me aside and pointed out how the utility lines on site were marked different than the blueprints. Spent the whole morning redoing the layout because I didn't check. How do you guys handle it when the drawings don't match what's on the ground?

Plans are just a starting point, not the final word. What worked for me was always doing a quick 10 minute walk-around before unloading anything. Grab a high-vis vest and a copy of the prints, then mark up any differences right there on the ground with a sharpie. Saves a whole lot of backtracking later. Better to look like you're double-checking than to have the foreman call you out for missing something obvious.

That little trick works with so many things outside of construction too. Same reason why I always unload groceries onto the counter before putting anything away, otherwise I end up shoving milk into the cupboard where the cans go. It's that moment of actually looking at what you've got before you commit to a plan. Even with something as simple as putting together furniture from a box, I've learned to lay out all the pieces and double check the diagram before I start cranking screws. Saves you from that sinking feeling when you realize you've been building the wrong side for twenty minutes.
