Landlord offered me $150 off rent to skip the licensed guy and use his handyman, and I actually paused
My sink started leaking under the cabinet last month, and my landlord said he'd knock $150 off next month's rent if I let his buddy Ray handle it instead of calling a licensed plumber. Ray showed up with a bucket and some tape, fixed it in 40 minutes, and it's been dry since. But here's the thing, I looked Ray up afterward and he's got two complaints filed against him with the state from 2022, both about water damage he supposedly caused. So now I'm stuck arguing with myself. One side says the fix worked, the guy saved me money, and reviews are just angry people yelling into the void anyway. The other side says I got lucky, and the next tenant who trusts Ray without checking might end up with a flooded floor and a landlord who vanishes. I keep thinking about a post I saw last week where someone said 'a cheap fix you can't trace is just a bill you haven't gotten yet.' That line stuck with me. So what's the move here, do you weigh a guy's actual work or do you weigh the paper trail? Where do you all draw the line on unlicensed help when the price is right?
