Debate: My derm said microneedling at home is fine but my esthetician freaked out when I told her

I did 3 sessions with a $40 roller from Amazon and saw good results on my acne scars, but now my esthetician says I probably damaged my skin barrier and should only do in-clinic treatments, so who do you believe when the advice completely contradicts each other?

Saw this exact debate on a skincare forum last week actually. The derms there were pretty split but the one I trusted most said home rollers are fine if you're careful about sterilization and don't go too hard. Your esthetician probably sees the worst cases (you know, people who go too deep or don't clean properly) so she's coming from a place of caution. That said, $40 rollers from Amazon can have uneven needle lengths which might cause micro-tears instead of clean punctures. I'd say maybe compromise - switch to a higher quality at-home device like a Dr. Pen or something similar if you want to keep doing it yourself.

Rolled my own for a year with a cheap kit and gave myself some nasty irritation. Switched to a Dr. Pen and it's been smooth sailing since, so that compromise actually worked for me.
