Just found out how many elevators are in New York City

I was reading an old trade magazine at the shop and saw a line about elevator counts. It said there are over 80,000 elevators in NYC. That number blew my mind, I had no idea it was that high. Can you imagine the service calls? Anyone work in a city with a crazy amount of units like that?

That 80,000 number is actually on the low side. The city's own buildings department puts the count closer to 100,000 passenger elevators and escalators. It makes sense when you add up all the public housing towers and pre war buildings with six units per floor. The maintenance logistics for that many are just wild to think about.

Remember reading about the old Woolworth Building. Had like 26 elevators back in 1913. Wild to think about the scale now like @kelly.keith said. Just miles of elevator shaft.
