Relatives popping in unannounced is wrecking my freelance flow

I set specific hours for my freelance writing, but my aunt always visits without warning. It throws my whole day off and I end up rushing to meet deadlines. How do you nicely say you're busy when family drops by?

Have you tried talking to your aunt directly about your work schedule? Putting a note on the door like Seth did can work, but with family it might feel a bit cold. A quick, honest chat is often kinder in the long run. You could tell her you get really focused during certain hours and would love to see her if she checks in first. It sets a clear line without making her feel unwelcome. Letting the frustration build is worse than one slightly awkward conversation.

Man, I used to believe an open door policy at home was just polite. Trying to freelance full time completely changed my mind on that. I finally had to put a polite but firm "I'm working until 5, text first" note on my front door, which felt tough but saved my sanity.
