My dad's old Craftsman socket set from 1987 finally let go last weekend

I was trying to break loose a rusted bolt on my lawn mower deck, the one near the blade. Put the 9/16 socket on there, gave it a good push, and the socket just split right down the side. It was the first time any piece of that set ever failed. That set has been through two garage moves, a basement flood, and probably a thousand projects. My dad gave it to me when he moved to Florida in 2010. I always figured those old raised panels would outlive me. Has anyone else had one of those old Craftsman sets finally give up on a random Tuesday?

A buddy of mine had his dad's old Craftsman ratchet finally give out while changing a tire in his driveway. He said it felt wrong tossing it in the trash after all those years.

felt wrong tossing it in the trash" - man, that’s the thing though, people don’t know he shouldn’t have thrown it at all. Craftsman tools from that era have a lifetime warranty, even if they’re beat up. He could’ve taken it to any Sears store back in the day, or an Ace Hardware that carries Craftsman now, and they’d swap it for a new one no questions asked. I get the sentimental part, but that ratchet could have been replaced for free instead of ending up in a landfill. Next time tell your buddy to check the warranty before he chucks anything with that name on it.
