Spent $200 on a 'professional grade' rust converter and it did nothing
Bought a gallon of that fancy rust converter from a specialty auto shop in Portland. After three coats and waiting a week, the rust on my '79 F-150 fender was still flaking off. Anyone else have better luck with just using vinegar and a wire wheel?

Vinegar and elbow grease is my go-to, but my welding skills are about as solid as that $200 coating.

Three coats and a week wait? That's insane, I'd be pissed too. I've never heard of anything that needs that many layers just to sit there and do nothing. $200 is robbery for a gallon of snake oil. Vinegar and a wire wheel is the only thing that's ever worked for me on old Ford trucks. That flaking just means the converter never actually bonded with the metal.
