I used to think those fancy laser levels were a total waste of money

That quiet victory is the best feeling. My uncle was the same way about my DeWalt laser until we had to lay out a long concrete pad. His old school methods took forever and he kept having to recheck. Once he saw the laser line stay perfect across the whole thing while he was still setting up, he shut right up. Sounds like @grace_perry44 finally got that same moment of peace.

Question about a site I visited near Mesa Verde

What if those boot prints are from the people who work there? I saw rangers at Chaco Canyon once, checking a wall after a storm... they had to go off trail to do their job. Maybe it was an inspection for safety or to fix a sign. Still, fresh prints by a closed area would make me look twice too.

I dropped $80 on a 'smart' plant sensor and it's been a total letdown

That "bone dry for a week" reading is the key thing, lunaw72. Most people don't realize those sensors measure electrical conductivity, not actual water. If the soil pulls away from the pot sides, the sensor can't make good contact. It reads air instead of damp soil deep down. So the app screams to water a plant that's actually still wet in the root ball. It's a design flaw they never warn you about.

Appreciation post: A customer in Portland said my risotto was 'too perfect' and lacked soul

Oh man, "until my ancestors whisper stop" is the realest cooking method there is, @seth_martinez21. I totally get that. For me, it's less about a feeling and more about smell. If I'm adding cumin to something like chili, I keep adding a little bit until I can just barely smell it over everything else in the pot. Then I know it's enough. After that, you just have to trust the process and let it cook.

Appreciation post: I switched from a standard 4-inch grinder to a 5-inch for bevel prep and it's a game changer

It's the power, not the size.
