inI finally got a smooth finish on a hot pour by adding a splash of cold water to the mix.
That's exactly it, it's about the total water. Jana's uncle has the right idea. You're not just adding water, you're swapping warm water for cold to slow the reaction down. The real problem is when guys add extra water on top of the mix design because they didn't plan for the heat. That's what kills the strength. A good batch plant can adjust the mix temperature before it even gets to you.

inThat job on the Snake River where the silt clogged the pump in under an hour
Yeah, we had the same problem on the Clearwater. Totally agree with @hannah_flores99 about a settling pit, that's what finally worked for us. Just a cheap dug-out spot to slow the water down before it hits the pump.

inVent: Hit 10,000 hours on the same tower crane downtown
Imagine being the only person who's seen the city change from that exact height. You watched them tear down the old bank on 5th, pour the foundation for the new apartments, and plant every tree in that little park. Your crane is like a time-lapse camera no one else got to watch.

inPSA: Overheard a guy at the marina in Galveston say he never checks his cutter head teeth before a job.
My uncle's dredge in Mobile Bay seized up from that exact habit. I mean, that's a really expensive way to get the memo.

inI finally visited my friend's new house in Portland and saw they painted their kitchen cabinets a really dark blue.
Actually, @angelafisher, it's not so much a lighting situation as it is a complete lack of it. The whole corner by the main stage is just dark. They have these two small spotlights that keep flickering on and off.
