I quit my garage shelving build 8 months ago, then my neighbor's $15 trick got it done in a weekend
I walked away from a half-built wall of garage shelves in my Houston house last spring because every bracket I tried bowed under the weight and I was sure I needed a $400 steel rack instead. My neighbor Dale looked at my mess and handed me a scrap of 1x4, saying the wall studs were 16 inches apart and all I had to do was screw a cleat into both studs and rest the shelf on top, no brackets at all. Anyone else here got a project sitting dead in the corner that a simple fix from someone else could probably finish?
I read a post on a woodworking forum last year about that same cleat trick, guy used 2x4s screwed straight into studs at 16 inch spacing and then laid 3/4 inch plywood on top. No brackets, no sag, and he claimed it held 300 pounds of paint cans. The math checks out too since the studs carry the load down instead of pulling on a bracket. My own garage has two half done shelves I gave up on, so Dale might be onto something worth trying.
