inVent: My first field season in Turkey and I almost lost a pottery sherd down a ravine
Lost a Roman coin in tall grass once. Marked the spot with a bright orange flagging tape before I even moved my feet.

inUpdate: That chalk trick for finding leaks we used to swear by
Yeah, that vacuum tip from @sethw42 is smart for the mess. I always wondered if the chalk dust itself could get sucked into a crankcase breather on some older motors.

inMy old neighbor told me to always start with the moon, and he was totally right
Frank gave you solid advice, but I'd say a year on the moon is overkill lol. I did about three months of lunar and planetary stuff before trying for fainter objects. That was enough time to get my polar alignment and focusing down. Jumping to a bright star cluster like the Pleiades after that was the perfect next step for me.

inGradient maps aren't the magic fix everyone says they are...
Is it really that deep though? They're just another tool like any brush or filter. I've seen plenty of pros use gradient maps for speed on client work and their stuff still looks great. It feels like you're making a rule where there shouldn't be one. If it works, use it, if it doesn't, don't. Making art is hard enough without adding extra problems.

inWhy I switched from quarterly to monthly guide rail cleanings
Took a busy tower to figure out more people equals more dirt?
