Gradient maps aren't the magic fix everyone says they are...

I used to depend on gradient maps for all my color work... everyone recommends them for quick fixes. But I stopped last month and began picking colors by hand instead. It's slower, sure, but my art has a much more unique feel now, and people have commented on the improvement. Letting go of those presets forced me to think more about each piece's mood.

Is it really that deep though? They're just another tool like any brush or filter. I've seen plenty of pros use gradient maps for speed on client work and their stuff still looks great. It feels like you're making a rule where there shouldn't be one. If it works, use it, if it doesn't, don't. Making art is hard enough without adding extra problems.

Man, you're so right about not making art harder than it has to be.

Guess my old gradient map addiction was the artistic equal of only eating microwave meals. Everything looked kinda decent but also like everyone else's warm leftovers. Sean's right that tools aren't bad, but forcing myself to cook from scratch finally taught me how flavors work. My colors are way more my own now, even if I burn the pan sometimes.
