Tried using old sewing patterns to draft a jacket and the sleeves came out completely backward on the first test fit

I stitched the whole left arm into the right armhole without noticing until I tried to put it on and my thumb pointed behind me, so now I double check orientation before I cut anything expensive, has anyone else had a pattern trick them like that?

Started sewing the left sleeve into the right armhole on a dress last year and didn't catch it until I tried to zip it up with my arm stuck out backwards like a zombie. My husband walked in and asked if I was making a straight jacket instead of a sundress. Had to walk away from the machine for a solid hour before I could face the seam ripper. Now I pin the pieces together and literally hold them up against my body before I sew a single stitch. The pattern paper lies, I swear they design these things to trick you on purpose.
