Overheard my neighbor say his wife won't let him touch the thermocouple on the water heater anymore

That made me think about all the times I've messed with gas fittings without turning the gas off first. Has anyone else gotten overconfident with basic gas repairs and then had a close call?

Did your neighbor ever say how he messed it up? A buddy of mine thought he could change the gas valve on his furnace blindfolded, no joke. He shut off the main line but forgot to bleed the air out before lighting it back up. That thing whooshed out a fireball that singed his eyebrows off and blew the access panel clean across the garage. His wife started calling the furnace guy from then on, and he had to rock a hat for two weeks. You ever see someone that proud get knocked down a peg by a pilot light?

Told my wife I knew what I was doing and she still won't let me near the pilot light.
