Can we talk about the 2.5 hour DMV line that taught me to check my registration date?

I walked into the Plano DMV last Tuesday at 8am thinking I'd be out in 20 minutes, and I didn't leave until 10:30. Turned out my registration expired 4 months ago and I never noticed because the sticker was hidden behind my wiper blade. The guy at the counter said about 1 in 5 people who come in are there for that exact reason, and the late fee was $38 on top of the regular $72. Now I have a calendar alert for the first of every month to walk out and actually look at my plate. Has anyone else had a sticker sneak up on them like that?
